Nisus releases new software for word processing on the mac, Nisus Writer Pro

Friday, April 13th, 2007

NisusproOver at The Unofficial Apple Weblog, Mat Lu writes a lil’ bit about the new app from Nisus: Nisus Writer Pro.

Their more established staple, Nisus Writer Express, has been my favorite for nearly a year. I have written many excellent papers (okay, well they looked excellent at least), and even converted my boss and a coworker to the app. (Yes, you’re welcome, again).

Being a huge proponent of Nisus Writer Express, I was instantly over on the download site and testing it out. Just reviewing the changelog, I see one huge feature: Floating Graphics!

Product Review: Acer 22″ Widescreen Monitor

Saturday, March 31st, 2007

AcerJust picked up a new 22″ widescreen to replace my aging 19″ standard aspect screen. What a difference! This model has two inputs, either DVI or VGA, ultimate compatibility.

I hooked it up with my 13″ BlackBook, no problem. I used an Apple mini dvi to dvi converter, plugged it in, calibrated the color, perfect.

Also, for the price, under $300, this monitor has amazing clarity, and a fantastic response time…5ms! Contrast ratio is 800:1. Not as good as 1000:1, but certainly better than my old ProView’s 500:1.

I highly recommend…that is, unless you can afford the 800 or so bucks for the Apple Cinema Display, which I cant. Donations kindly accepted, by the way.

You really have to be a Geek to miss your computer

Sunday, March 11th, 2007

Dscf1359I recently sold my Apple iBook G4 to a lucky buyer on Ebay. I have to say, the Macs hold their value quite well. After doing the fresh install of Tiger, I got a little nostalgic. This was not only my first Mac, but it was the first laptop…well first computer I ever purchased new, as opposed to the ridiculous frankenstein desktops I used to build.

I remember walking into the Apple store in Novi, Michigan. The store was amazing. I had never seen a store so clean, so full of helpful people. I told them I wanted to switch to Mac, and they were just as tickled as I was.

Macworld: Feature: The multiple-OS Mac

Macworld did a great write-up on multiple-os, virtual machines. As a wee lil’ iBook G4 user, I have yet to really enjoy the benefits of multiple OSes. I am anticipating my new Intel-mac, however, and am looking forward to installing Windows (I know, ugh) as well as an install of Linux.

Now that there are some really great virtualization software options available, I have to wonder why anyone would stick to one operating system. To be honest, I love my Mac, and I have grown quite comfortable with it (thanks mostly to Quicksilver).

Nevertheless, it would seem very self-limiting for an Informatics student to use only one operating system. I would think it could be very beneficial to learn as many operating systems as possible for a well-rounded education.

Ebay Shipping Label Solution for Mac Users

Monday, December 18th, 2006

Ebay is not a very friendly place for Mac users. The problem with printing online postage labels has frustrated many a user, and the workarounds can be almost as frustrating.

I started selling on eBay around a month ago. Of course, I don’t want to be bothered with running to the post office and such; I’m a very busy person, after all. A great solution is paying for postage online, and requesting a carrier pickup. And therein lies the problem. Paying for postage online is virtually impossible for a mac user.

I have found two great workarounds that are quite simple. The first solution worked great, until I needed to purchase postage for Media Mail. Then I stumbled onto the second solution.
